Debian 8 no longer supported -- implications for Kiwi owners

If your Kiwi currently runs Debian 8, and a recent version of the Kiwi software (v1.472 or later), you can continue to do so. No changes are needed and you will receive future Kiwi software updates. However, you might consider upgrading from Debian 8 to 10. This procedure will upgrade while preserving your Kiwi customization changes.

Important note: The sd card supplied with your Kiwi will no longer work because Debian 8 is no longer supported by debian.org
If you need to re-flash your Kiwi copy the Kiwi-customized Debian 10 image onto an sd card by following these instructions. Be sure to initially give your Kiwi a connection to the Internet and let it update to the latest software release. This process can take up to 60 minutes. Unfortunately, all your Kiwi customizations will be lost unless you've been able to save them before re-flashing.

Beagle root password

Did your Kiwi not have a Beagle/Linux root password set and now it's asking for one?
Recent security changes have automatically applied a password to any root or debian account passwords that were blank/unset. The password is either the Kiwi admin password, if one was set, or the Kiwi serial number written on the top of the circuit board in the white box (also available on the admin interface "network" tab). To find out what the password was changed to please see this forum post.

Security alert -- BBAI owners ONLY (Debian 9): /usr/bin/pkexec exploit

This issue ONLY effects BeagleBone-AI based Kiwis running Debian 9.
Regular Kiwis running Debian 8 or 10 are not effected.

It is extraordinarily important that you verify your Kiwi has updated to
software version

v1.461

(or later) released on 15 July 2021 to fix a security vulnerability.
